HISTORY OF CANDELABRAS: In today’s modern world, you may not consider candelabra for your event or special occasion at first glance. However, after understanding their history and the meaning of the candelabra, you may consider the ambience and class they bring. The candle has been around as early as 3000 BC and since then, people have wanted to display and present the light of them extravagantly. Candleholders (or candelabras) made of clay have been found dating back to 400 BC. Excavations at Pompeii, Italy revealed several candelabra. You’ll be able to find a pair of silver candelabra and a storage chest manufactured by Tiffany and Company in 1892 at the amazing Hill House Historic Site in St. Paul, MN. Even after 115 years, they still have their luster and sheen. Candelabras came to the wedding scene when Koch Originals introduced them in the early 1900's. They still manufacture wedding candelabras today for weddings and events. CANDELABRA DEFINITION: Latin candelebrum, candlestick, from candela, candle Candelabra is the term that refers to a pair or more of decorative candlesticks or candleholders shaped as a column or pedestal and having several arms for holding candles. A single version of candelabra would be called a candelabrum. While generally not needed today due to electrical lighting, candelabras and candlesticks are often used in modern homes as accessories or as part of the interior design. They are also found in many events and ritual activities as both a backdrop and setting piece. CANDELABRA STYLES: You’ll find a variety of candelabra styles and fashions at CandelabraSupply.com. First, there is a general difference between the tabletop and floor candelabras – these are obvious. Freestanding floor candelabras do not need support while aisle candelabras and non-freestanding candelabras generally need to be attached to a sturdy item. Aisle candelabras are generally single light, while other floor candelabras can go up to 20 or more lights. You can also consider different types of candelabra looks – namely traditional candelabras, which hold the taller candles vs. the teardrop candelabras which hold disposable votives in a glass enclosure. Finishes range widely with candelabras, you can choose from brass to silver or consider an “older” classic iron look either in white or black. Once you’ve determined your setting, you should be able to choose a perfect candelabra finish to match. Candelabras work well as wedding centerpieces also. Our centerpiece candelabras will add a touch of class while providing great light in a dim setting.
